It Is Finished: The Cry That Shook Eternity

Of the seven sayings of Christ from the cross, only one is a shout of triumph: "It is finished" (John 19:30). In the Greek, a single word — tetelestai. Merchants wrote it across paid invoices: paid in full. Servants used it when a task was complete. Priests declared it over an unblemished sacrifice. Jesus gathers all three meanings into one cry and hurls it at the gates of hell.

What was finished?

Not His life — He laid that down and took it up again. Not His love — that is everlasting. What ended at the cross was the whole economy of earning. The handwriting of ordinances that was against us was nailed there (Colossians 2:14). The sacrificial system, the endless repetition, the unfinished altar — all of it closed by one offering, once for all.

The cross is not God saying "try harder." It is God saying "it is done."

Church, hear this: you cannot add to a finished work, and you must not subtract from it. Your salvation does not rest on the quality of your grip on Christ but on the completeness of His grip on you. Whatever you walked in carrying — guilt, shame, a debt you could never repay — the receipt has already been issued. Tetelestai. Paid in full.

So go home in the freedom of a finished salvation. Serve God this week not to be forgiven, but because you are. That is the difference between religion and the gospel, between slavery and sonship, between a wage and a gift.
