The Grace That Found You: Why the Gospel Begins Before You Do

There is a sentence in Ephesians that should stop every hurried reader in their tracks: "He hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world." Before you took your first breath, before your first prayer and your first failure, the triune God had already set His love upon His people. Grace is not God's response to our initiative. It is the initiative itself.

This is what the older writers called prevenient grace — the grace that goes before. The shepherd in Luke 15 does not wait for the sheep to find its way home; he goes after it until he finds it. Notice the posture: the sheep contributes exhaustion and wandering. The shepherd contributes pursuit, strength, and joy.

The end of earning

Many believers secretly live as though grace got them in the door but effort keeps them in the room. Paul demolishes this in a single verse: "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). While we were yet sinners — not after we improved, not once we promised to do better. The cross is the measure of God's love, and it was measured out at your worst.

You were not loved because you were lovely. You are lovely because you are loved.

Resting in a finished work

What does this produce in a life? Not passivity, but rest — the kind of rest that finally frees the hands for obedience. When you know the debt is paid, gratitude replaces anxiety as the engine of holiness. You stop obeying to be accepted and start obeying because you are.

Take a moment today to trace the grace that found you: the sermon you almost didn't hear, the friend who wouldn't stop praying, the Scripture that would not leave you alone. None of it was accident. The hound of heaven was on your trail, and He has brought you home.
