The Armour of God: Standing Firm When the Battle Finds You

Three times in four verses Paul repeats the same command: stand. "Withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand" (Ephesians 6:13). We often imagine spiritual warfare as a charge; Scripture describes it as a stand. The ground was won at the cross. Our task is not to take it but to refuse to leave it.

Truth before everything

The first piece mentioned is the belt of truth — the garment that held everything else together for a Roman soldier. The enemy's oldest weapon is the lie (Genesis 3:1), and the believer's first defence is the truth of God's Word, buckled tight around the core of the life. Loose truth makes for loose living.

Righteousness, peace, faith

The breastplate guards the heart — and it is His righteousness, not ours, that covers us. The shoes of the gospel of peace mean the believer stands firm precisely because the battle between God and their soul is already settled. And the shield of faith quenches "fiery darts": sudden accusations, fears, and temptations, extinguished not by willpower but by trust in what God has said.

The armour is put on every morning, but the victory was won once for all.

Finally, note where the armour ends: in prayer (v. 18). "Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit." Prayer is not a seventh piece of armour; it is the atmosphere in which all the armour works. Suit up, then kneel down. That is how saints stand.
